More Than A Family Farm.
Neukom Family Farm has been a certified organic fruit and vegetable farm for 27 years. In 2016 when cannabis was legalized, they decided to diversify its farm offerings and cultivate a cannabis reality. Amy Neukom is head of the cannabis project on the farm and works with local seedsmen and women to grow full term sun grown plants alongside the row crops and fruit trees. The native soils were already primed for success with years of good soil and resource stewardship. Amy and the crew at Neukom Family Farm practice a type of Agriculture that is more steward than extractor. The idea is to enrich the land and environment so that it is more abundant and fertile in 100 years than it is today.
The Farm uses beneficial insects to fight problem insects, not chemicals. When people buy their flowers, peaches or any other crop they are receiving the purest nourishment and medicine possible. Neukom Family Farms is a leader in the Humboldt agriculture community with practices that really make a difference in the quality of the product and the health of the environment. The farm makes its own compost in a closed loop fertility cycle. The farm practices techniques such as dry farming and drip irrigation so that it has an incredibly low water use for an 18 acre farm with such high production. With a land base of 46 acres, what isn’t part of the Certified Organic farm or the sun and earth certified cannabis operation is left for nature and managed for its benefit.
More Than Cannabis.
They’re known locally for its pristine fruit and vegetable crops. 18 different peach varieties and 15 types of pluot make up the bulk of the tree fruit offerings but persimmon, kiwi, apple, pear, pomegranate, meyer lemons and asian pear are also featured. There are over 1600 trees in production. This is also alongside 9 different melon varieties and one of the largest tomato offerings in the region. If you want to be impressed just stop by the local farmers market in Arcata during the growing season on any Saturday and brave the line to buy their produce.
How It's Grown.
The Cannabis is grown in the middle of the farm. There are pomegranates to the west, tomatoes to the East, peppers and eggplant to the south and wild nature to the North. The plants are started from seed on the farm. All the plants are in bottomland native soil. The plants are in a permanent bed system with perennial flowering plants interspersed amongst them. Hundreds of Yarrow, rosemary, milkweed, winter savory, oregano, clary sage, calendula and others grow year round in the beds that are mulched with straw (grown on the farm) and supplemented with organic natural compost (made on the farm) for fertility. Drip irrigation is used to minimize water use. Drip irrigation is placed under the mulch so that even less water is lost to evaporation. Amy cut her plant numbers this year to allow for better air flow and sun penetration to combat fungal issues. These are the techniques used throughout the farm to deal with these problems such as powdery mildew and bud rot, not chemicals.
One of the strengths of Amy’s system is that the diversity of this farm means that no one crop is critical. There have been years where the peach crop was lost to rain, so the tomatoes paid the bills. Many farmers can’t afford to lose the crop, especially if it is the only crop. Amy is committed to clean pure food and cannabis, she would rather lose the crop than spray it with something she wouldn’t want to put into her own body, which there aren't many other farmers that could or would make that commitment.
Dry Farming Practices.
Neukom Family Farms practices dry farming, in which they utilize the residual moisture left from the rainy season to help produce their cannabis during the dry season. Which means that the Neukom family doesn’t run an irrigation system or use extra water to water their produce. This is due to the fact that the Neukom’s land is situated where they are considered a rainforest in their small vicinity as they are tucked away in a valley and get huge amounts of rain during the rainy season. Therefore, allowing them to be even more sustainable for their community and local habitat as they aren’t importing water from outside resources or irrigating water from local water-sheds.
This truly unique place in Humboldt County allows them to grow hand-crafted Cannabis in a “Garden of Eden”, in which their growing conditions cannot be replicated anywhere else in the world. Within the 45+ acres that they own, the Neukom family are stewards for most of their property to be used for wildlife preservation to help restore native species within their vicinity. All these factors translate into why their cannabis is so special.
Community Driven.
Amy’s goal has always been to feed their community healthy food to help uplift their local community. With the legalization of Cannabis in California within the last few years they have looked at the crop as a good diversification for their farm. Amy and her family have always had a relationship with the plant and understood its profound importance in our community but until legalization they felt that they had worked so hard and come so far, it was not worth risking everything for the financial rewards of the black market or the gray market that it evolved into.
